Social Tokens and Creator-Centric Economies
Rex Woodbury’s Digital Native is one of my favourite newsletters. His latest issue talks about one of the trendiest topics we hear about today: the creator economy and social tokens.
I recommend you read his newsletter issue instead of me trying to summarise it here. Then, come back after you’re done.
read Rex’s Digital Native first.
done?
Now, I think the idea of being able to “discover” someone and being able to invest in them is excellent. It’s rewarding for fans, the artist/creator, and the whole ecosystem.
Are we there yet? If you’re an early-adopter type, yes, but for mass adoption, probably not. Services like Rally.io or BitClout are good starters, but it’s not easy enough for the public to start using them - yet.
We’ll be there soon, though, but meanwhile, if you know an excellent creator, keep an eye on them; invest in them when possible… It’s worth it.

More on the Creator Economy
Now, if you read Rex’s piece on social tokens and creator-centric economies, here’s something that can help you understand the creator economy a bit better.
Not exactly by coincidence, but I’ve listened to two podcasts centred around the same ideas this week.
MrBeast’s interview on Colin and Samir Show [Spotify | Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | YouTube]
two of the Dude Perfect guys on How I Built This with Guy Raz [Spotify | Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts]
these are two examples that you can get a bit deeper into to understand the whole ecosystem.
Although each developed their unique style during the years, both MrBeast and Dude Perfect are creators with huge fanbases. And that’s almost the only thing that matters. If we circle back to the idea of the attention economy (i know, we’re throwing the E word around a lot — and not in its most usual way), we can see how creators can turn their audience [and their attention] to money in a way that’s both beneficial to the fans and the creators.
This is the power of the creator economy — it’s a win-win for the creators and their audience and a big L for the gatekeepers.
here you can connect and directly support your favourite creator, whether it’s for their TikTok videos or their newsletter [ahem!] or their podcast or YouTube videos…
You support them and enable them to create more of what you like; because creating content - in any format - takes time [and attention]. And if you want them to have more time, they should be able to support themselves financially to be able to spend that time creating content instead of getting a “real job” that pays their bill and create content “in their free time” — it’s that simple.
and if you can’t afford to support your fav creator financially, sharing their work is the best way to support them. i’m just sayin’
