📡 Stop looking at me 👀 — seriously.
Hello and welcome to this week’s Pulse — the weekly techie/businessy newsletter from @perspectiveix. I’m your host, Ben, and I’d like to thank you for being here with me.
If we’re friends on Snapchat, you probably have seen the new lens I made — and if we’re not friends, whose fault is that? We should be! Add me. I’m currently working on a few photo filters, trying to remind myself how much I liked photography when outside wasn’t so far away [dramatic music].
Now, let’s get scrolling ‘coz this week’s insight is so… relatable.
🧠 INSIGHTS
Being observed - Credit: Jonathan Borba on Unsplash
Stop looking at me. Seriously.
Living our lives, we make many decisions in the presence of others — ordering at a restaurant or going somewhere as part of a group.
Today, aside from being directly observed by people around us, the decisions we make are subject to more observation by technology, allowing firms not only to record and track but to analyse our behaviour and decision-making process.
Companies like Amazon and Netflix are utilising this type of analysis to provide you with “inspired by your purchases” or “inspired by your browsing/watching history.”
This piece is based on a recent series of studies, where Yonat Zwebner, PhD and Rom Schrift, PhD compared consumers’ responses to observations of two stages in decision-making — pre-choice & purchase. What they found is that observation in the pre-choice stage triggered greater aversion than did observation in the purchase stage.
Observation of the pre-choice process changed consumers’ preferences in specific ways: to evade being observed in the preference-construction stage, consumers distorted their preferences. They behaved in a manner that enabled them to resolve the decision with as little conflict as possible — by choosing default options or making no purchase at all.

Playing Favourites - Hidden Brain
If we do a favour for someone we know, we think we’ve done a good deed. What we don’t tend to ask is: Who have we harmed by treating this person with more kindness than we show toward others?
this episode of Hidden Brain really spoke to me and made me think. being conscious about every little decision we have to make does suck, so we trust our guts. but how does your gut think?!

🐦 TWEETS of the WEEK
You don’t have to die
To rest in peace.
If you're reading, watching, or listening to the right things, learning is as just as much fun as being entertained
If you hate a person, then you’re defeated by them.
