đĄ TwitterSpaces vs Clubhouse
Pulse #125 â After about a month of testing Clubhouse and a couple of days of testing TwitterSpaces, hereâs what stood out to me.
Iâve been using Clubhouse for almost five weeks now, and I think Twitter has picked up on that because the other day I was given access to TwitterSpaces â Twitterâs Clubhouse competitor.
For the past couple of weeks, I could see TwitterSpaces in my Twitter app [up there next to Fleets], but I wasnât able to host my own space â and now I can! Which is pretty exciting for a geek like me. So yesterday, I jumped in a TwitterSpace with a couple of friends to test it out and compare it to Clubhouse â and here are my first thoughts:
Voice quality: Clubhouse > TwitterSpaces
TwitterSpaces is a bit more buggy than Clubhouse, which is understandable
TwitterSpaces has a reaction feature, which is quite handy [itâs like the reactions to DMs on Twitter], but all you can do on Clubhouse is to turn your mic [blink] on/off
On TwitterSpaces, you can share tweets on a Space while itâs on [and probably talk about itâŚ], but on Clubhouse, all you can do is to update your profile photo and ask the room to PTR (pull-to-refresh) if you want to talk about something with a visual nature.
TwitterSpaces limit the number of speakers to 10; Clubhouseâs room limit is now 8,000.
On TwitterSpaces, you can choose who can enter the space as a speaker with the options (everyone, people you follow, or only people you invite)
TwitterSpaces have a transcription feature, which has been renamed to caption now
And personally, Twitter[Spaces] looked fancier and better designed than Clubhouse.
TwitterSpaces doesnât everyone in the space, whereas Clubhouse shows everyone in a room. In a Twitter space, thereâs a good chance youâll see a number of avatars and then a circle with +135 [or something] number in it.
Other than these mainly technical/visual differences, one thing that makes a huge difference, at least IMO, is that with TwitterSpaces, you need to have a community already, but on Clubhouse, you can start building one a lot easier as the content to attention ration is quite low.
Also, Clubhouse is already thinking about direct monetisation, where Twitterâs monetisation approach is advertising [at least for now].
Now, back to you⌠have you tried either? What do you think? Do you think the audio space will be winner-takes-all? Which one do you think will last? Please share your thoughtsâŚ
Now, letâs jump in!

Worth Your Attention
I enjoy creating and curating content, especially when the amount of useless stuff on the internet easily trumps the amount of useful content â and this newsletter is a result of this; but starting it was quite a struggle⌠From imposter syndrome to the fear of what would others say, never thinking about the fact that if people read my stuff and say something, it meant they spent time and attention on it and I should be thankful! Itâs a lot better than no one actually caring about what Iâve writtenâŚ
However, this newsletter is not the only place Iâm active. Iâve got a pretty big community on Telegram and hereâs a piece by someone from my Telegram audience. Itâs definitely worth youâre attention:
You donât have to be great to start, you have to start to be great.
